Matiullah Matie has had lots of attention as one of the first Afghan refugees to settle in Wausau and now the one-time businessman and tribal leader has been arrested by the Wausau Police Department for alleged misconduct.
According to a press release issued earlier today the department received a complaint Wednesday of sexual assault in the fourth degree which purportedly occurred when a female acquaintance of Matie was in a vehicle with him on the northeast side of the city. She was assisting Matie and his family with their resettlement process. She reported the alleged incident and he was arrested today and later released from jail on a signature bond.
This category of sexual assault charge is a misdemeanor in Wisconsin and has not been proven or tested in court yet in this case. The investigation is ongoing and more details will be provided in the coming criminal complaint.
